The new age sausage
Sausages just keep getting better and better
Gone are the days of the dreary British banger served with soggy cabbage and a watery gravy! And even though the classic pork sausage and Cumberland sausage are still best sellers, there’s a growing market for a more upper class sausage. Many English restaurants with a reputation for honest traditional fare make sure the humble sausage is included in the menu. Serve this with a generous helping of horseradish-mash and succulent onion gravy and you have a meal to rival the best of British.
A sausage for every flavour
The new leading edge bangers come in hundreds of flavours and can be made to order from any good local butcher or sausage maker. You’ll find anything from stilton and pork, feta cheese and black olive to a hot ‘n’ spicy tomato and chilli pepper sausage. A favourite with the kids is the pizza flavour or the pork and apple sausage, served with a good portion of British seasonal veggies and a few home cooked chips and you’ll have some happy tots!!
Healthy sausages - healthy diet
As a nation we’re becoming more aware of the need to look after our bodies and have started paying attention to what we eat. If you’re looking after your waistline then a good alternative to the full fat sausage is the lower-fat healthier option. Any flavour sausage can be made as a low -fat alternative, so you get the same taste but without all the calories!
Serve a really appetising dinner by replacing the mash with a good fistful of hot and peppery rocket or watercress and some oven baked carrots in a good chardonnay and thyme, and you’ll get the thumbs up from your dinner guests
On a slightly more nostalgic note, there’s a growing trend to dip into the food of the 70’s and the old sausage-on-a-stick is making an appearance again!! Not just for the blue hair brigade, but for cool finger food at summer and winter buffets. Sausage on sticks don’t look out of place served amongst the olive and caper crustini and smoked salmon. |
